About Scott

Introduction - What is it like being a Cosplayer?

I only recently got into cosplay a few years ago when a friend of mine invited me to go to an Irish pub wearing a kilt. I decided to go full Braveheart with the facepaint (technically Scottish, I know). We had a blast and I instantly feel in love with the gimmick. Shortly after that I did a zombie pub crawl and had another great time. I've only cosplayed a few times a year since, but it is something I can see myself doing for years to come. I tend to enjoy doing cosplay the most when it isn't expected (i.e. just you and your friends are dressed up out on the town) rather than at conventions. Just being out of the ordinary you catch people off guard and you can see it brighten their face. That feeling, knowing you made someone's day better is what I'm addicted to. I've also noticed that even if the costume barely disguises my actual identity, something about being in dressed up allows me to let loose and I feel free to do things I may be more reserved about when not in costume.

What are your next goals?

Since it was suggested, I will try Buzz Lightyear next. I will try to make it somewhat my own. I'm not sure what that entails just yet, but I know I'll figure it out.

Cosplay Characters

I've done Braveheart, a zombie stormtrooper, Tigger and my personal favorite is Wario. Wario was fairly easy to put together. I bought some white overalls and dyed them, bought the hat/mustache set, I happened to already have green boots and just picked up a yellow shirt. It may be simple, but it really comes together well. Even though I am not short nor fat, the character really seems to fit and I've gotten a lot of positive feedback about the outfit. I've only dressed up as him twice, but I will probably continue to pull him from my repertoire. Someone suggested that I would make a good Buzz Lightyear. So, that will probably be my next outfit.

What does Cosplay mean to you?

It is a release from the norm. I get to pretend to be someone else for a while. It's quite liberating.

Who have been your biggest influences/role models/mentors?

Jessica Nigri is nice to look at, but I wouldn't call her an influence. To be honest, I'm not deep into the cosplay culture, so she is one of the few cosplayers I know.

Do you have any advice or suggestions for upcoming Cosplayers?

I like to pick a theme, invite my friends to join and just make a night of it. There is no need to wait for a convention or an "excuse" to cosplay. Just have fun and other's will join in. Haters will always hate and you will inevitably run into people who just don't get it, but they are few and far between (mostly just guys jealous that you are getting all of the attention from the women at the bars). Wear your costume with pride. Don't be embarrassed to be "weird". Own it and have fun with it. That is the point, after all.

What is the most negative experience you've dealt with while cosplaying, and how did you handle it?

I've never had a negative experience. Sometimes you get glares, but as a mentioned before it's just guys who are mad that women are paying attention to me and not them.

Any final remarks or shout-outs?

Thanks for asking my thoughts on cosplay. I hope you enjoy the pictures. I enjoyed the experiences.
