For me cosplay is about showing your love for a particular character. It is fun, creative, and meaningful as a hobby.

Cosplay is a way to express yourself and make friends with similar interests. I really started with the goal in mind of creating the entire wardrobe of my favorite character.
No Cosplayers particularly influenced me, but all of my cosplay roll-models are the characters I play. I love Wolfram because of his growth, character, and tragic-one-sided-love. I love Virtual Girlfriend because mostly I get to make up what she's about, and it's hilarious. She also loves Neil DeGrasse Tyson and so clearly she's got a good head on her holographic shoulders. But actually, mostly I cosplay VG because my real life fiance makes such a great Kriger, and it was a great way to get him to play dress up with me.
Don't be afraid to make mistakes! I learned everything from making mistakes and fixing them. I made clothes by taking clothes apart and re-assembling them. I've taken apart all sorts of household items for props and inspiration. Yes, it's fun to be authentic, but the most importiant thing is how much fun you have while working on and wearing your project. Just have as much fun as you can.
As a girl who cosplays boys 99% of the time, the 1% of the time I'm a girl in a skimpy outfit it was appauling the kind of stuff that is said and done by strangers who think they are suddenly allowed to touch or verbally harrass you. Luckily I have a thick skin and a good/pervy sense of humor, but you need to be alert to keep yourself safe, just like you would in any non-cosplay situation.
