Introduction - What is it like being a Cosplayer?

I'm a software engineer by day but love that with cosplay I can be transformed into whomever I want. I love learning new crafting skills to make each costume better than the last. I'm a very shy person IRL but when I'm in costume I become a different person. It's truly satisfying when others want pictures of my costumes that I worked so hard to create. I prefer to cosplay as Pokemon characters because of all the fond childhood memories I have of the anime, video games, and card game. I literally live my childhood dream when I cosplay.

What are your next goals?

The part of my team rocket costume people loved most was the custom Mylar Koffing ballon I threw together last minute. It was my own special twist to a costume that others have done. I'd like to actually melt my own Mylar balloon next time to have a floating team rocket Meowth ballon and basket to bring something extra to the costume.

What does Cosplay mean to you?

Cosplay to me is about literally living my childhood dreams. It's about bringing nostalgia to myself and others when they see me in costume.

Who have been your biggest influences/role models/mentors?

As fake and scripted as the show seems I must admit that Heros of Cosplay got me really sold on the idea of cosplay. Before that I had just dabbled in elaborate Halloween costumes. I then took to reddit/r/cosplay to see the beautiful work others do. I don't have any specific role models but just love that reddit allows for such easy sharing with a really specific group. I get constant inspiration, tips, and ideas from others who are kind enough to share their cosplay experiences.

Do you have any advice or suggestions for upcoming Cosplayers?

The convention community is so open and inviting. If you're passionate about something then cosplay it. Let your geek flag fly

What is the most negative experience you've dealt with while cosplaying, and how did you handle it?

Having a prop or costume idea that just doesn't work out as expected. My Jessie wig for example was going to be shaped like Jessie's hair with a frame of corset boning and wire. But it ended up looking like a red elf hat. After hours of work I cut my loses and just wore the wig down. Just don't let your costume flaws get to you. Usually you're your own worst critic. Just be proud of the work you've accomplished and show it off.
