About Paragon Cosplay

Introduction - What is it like being a Cosplayer?

We are Paragon Cosplay (Nick, Krista, Josh, and Cristi) a Cosplay group based out of Madison, Wi and the Chicago land area. New to the convention circuit we have varied backgrounds from theatre performers to haunted house designing. The general consensus is that it is amazing to be a cosplayer. We love the interaction with fans and especially the genuine happiness people have when they see their favorite character. So far we have had nothing but good experiences with the cosplay and fan communities. We currently have a core group of 4 with 3 floaters.

What are your next goals?

Our next goal is Facebook likes! We are trying to build up a little fan base in our con area! On a serious note, we're looking into flipping sides on our next cosplay and being heroes instead of villians. I can't go into details, but we have a few really cool group ideas on tap and some iconic figures in progress. We are always trying to improve our past costumes. Some of us are starting to branch out into real armor crafting.

Cosplay Characters

So far we have done the following: Nick - Bane, John Snow Krista - Ivy, Sansa Stark, Sailor Moon Josh - Scarecrow, Jorah Mormont Cristi - Cat Woman, Daenerys Targaryen, Sailor Mars, Elsa We have lots planned in the future, and a few completed that have not yet been revealed.

What does Cosplay mean to you?

Cosplay is another medium for expression, its a mixture or art and performance. It allows you to go be a character for a day and have a blast doing it. It's also a great way to meet new people and just be in an environment different from the daily 9-5 grind.

Who have been your biggest influences/role models/mentors?

So far most of our influences are child hood fantasy favorites and 3rd party concept art. We like to add a little of our own twists and personalities to each build. We don't really follow any other cosplayers at the moment. We serve as our own role models and push each other to grow. We draw a lot from our past experiences.

Do you have any advice or suggestions for upcoming Cosplayers?

Find as many concept images of the cosplay you want to do as you can. With so many artistic interpretations out there now days you can pick and choose elements that fit your skills and style. Plan to look good and know that fans will stop you. Make sure you plan out when you want to do in advance and be prepared to stop for photos along the way. Before you buy anything for your character, whether it be a prop or garb, make sure you ask yourself "can I build this"? Also, when choosing a character, get to know and love it because fellow con-goers will talk to you in character.

What is the most negative experience you've dealt with while cosplaying, and how did you handle it?

So far the worst thing we have experienced is wardrobe malfunctions and general costuming meltdowns. We made emergency repairs and now carry a cosplay repair kit to save us from some of the more embarrassing accidents. We also stopped using hot glue. It seemed like a good idea...but everything we used it on the 1st time exploded by day 2 of the con! We also had an issue with uncomfortable footwear. Gotta make sure you break them in....and carry bandaids for if you start to blister.
